Better Homes and Gardens once called Roger Shollmier the ‘Frugal Kitchen Guru.” Roger can apply the same principles of function and design to any kitchen, regardless of size or budget. The kitchen in this 1950s home is a perfect example.
The before-and-after floor plans show where a wall was removed to open the kitchen to the family room. A large peninsula was added for a wonderful cooking and entertaining center, where family and friends congregate. The hood was built to house the vent and decorative lighting, and to create an architectural interest.
The original cabinets were replaced by beautiful maple cabinets, loaded with features such as deep, full-extension drawers, drawer buffers, and pull-out cabinets for spices near the cook top. The counter top on the peninsula is granite, and smooth concrete tops the perimeter cabinets. The sink is high quality stainless steel with a built-in drain board. The faucet is a commercial-type industrial sprayer, and a rolling cart is conveniently stowed for serving or an extra prep area.
